Why Couples Should Make Time to Read Together

At HunyyDo's Date Planning, our mantra is "Couples that play together, stay together.” But what about reading together? While often overlooked, sharing a book with your partner can be an intimate and meaningful experience. It’s not just about the stories—it’s about creating space to connect, spark conversations, and even reignite romance (you can gather some great ideas too). Whether it's snuggling up with poetry, diving into a captivating romance novel, or laughing over a lighthearted comedy, reading together fosters closeness in ways that few other activities can.

There are many benefits of reading as a couple that offer much more than just entertainment. You check the boxes on

  • Quality Time: sharing a story invites you to slow down and focus on each other without distractions
  • New Conversations: introducing new topics, creating natural opportunities for deeper conversations
  • Emotional Intimacy: sharing heartfelt passages or romantic poems reignite tenderness and romance
  • Shared Goals: selecting and finishing a book together gives you a sense of accomplishment as a couple.

You can incorporate reading into your relationship with date night activities such as Bedtime Stories for Grownups; Poetry Night, Audiobook Adventures, or a Book Club for Two. Snuggle up and take turns reading to each other. Bonus points for lighting a candle to set the mood with glasses of your favorite beverage!

Here are a few books to get the connection, fun, and romance started.

  • The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
  • Hold Me Tight by Dr. Sue Johnson
  • Love Poems by Pablo Neruda
  • The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
  • Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling (light and funny!)
  • You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle (romantic comedy)
  • The Brown Series by Zane (erotic)
  • The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by John Gottman (for deeper conversations)

If you don’t have time to sit and read, audiobooks are the perfect alternative. Queue up a love story or relationship book and listen together while commuting, relaxing, or winding down for the evening. Apps like Audible or Libby have been a game-changer, making it easy to access a wide range of titles. Adjust the speed to fit your pace—some couples breeze through stories at 1.5x speed, while others slow down to savor the moments.

Making time to read together isn’t just about finishing a book—it’s about deepening your connection and sharing new experiences. Whether you’re laughing, learning, or tearing up together, reading as a couple is a simple way to grow closer and it's sexy too. So grab a blanket, pick a book, and let the magic of reading create an extra spark.

HunnyDo's Date Planning works with couples to create unique date experiences to continue to play together and stay together.
